Get a daily benefit if you have a covered stay in a hospital

Hospital Indemnity Insurance pays a daily benefit if you have a covered stay in a hospital.* You can use your benefit payments however you would like, such as for out-of-pocket medical expenses, travel, food and lodging expenses or everyday expenses like utilities and groceries. A benefit waiting period may apply and other facilities may be covered as defined in your certificate. Hospital Indemnity Insurance is a limited benefit policy. Your Hospital Indemnity Insurance includes the following benefits:

Daily Confinement Benefit

A daily confinement benefit is payable starting day 2 of your confinement in a covered hospital. Benefits are payable for a total of 30 days for a period of confinement. Only one type of confinement or admission benefit is payable per day.

Health System Benefit

If a covered employee, spouse or child receives services for treatment at a facility that is owned, operated or maintained by the employer/organization, the payable benefit(s) will be increased as reflected in your schedule of benefits.

Wellness Benefit

This is an annual benefit you can earn by completing an eligible health screening test, such as mental health screening, flu immunization, a mammogram and a routine eye or dental exam. If your spouse and/or children are covered by Hospital Indemnity Insurance, they are eligible for this benefit as well. A maximum amount for all children may apply.

What is Hospital Indemnity Insurance?

Hospital Indemnity Insurance pays a daily benefit if you have a covered stay in a hospital*, critical care unit** or rehabilitation facility**, on or after your coverage effective date. The benefit amount is determined based on the type of facility and the number of days you stay. This is a limited benefit policy. Hospital Indemnity Insurance is not health insurance and does not satisfy the requirement of minimum essential coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

*The definition of hospital does not include an institution or part or an institution used as: a hospice unit, including any bed designated as a hospice or a swing bed; a convalescent home; a rest or nursing facility; a free-standing surgical center; a rehabilitative facility; an extended care facility; a skilled nursing facility; or a facility primarily affording custodial, educational care or care for the aged.

**Covered facilities may vary based on your employer's policy.

How can Hospital Indemnity Insurance help?

You can use the benefit however you would like. While coverage amounts may vary, below are a few examples of how you could use your benefit:

  • Out of pocket medical expenses, such as deductibles and co-pays
  • Travel, food and lodging expenses for family members
  • Child care
  • Everyday expenses like utilities and groceries

Why should I enroll through my employer?

Premium amounts are deducted from your paychecks, so you don’t have to worry about paying another bill.

Can I purchase coverage for my spouse and child?

Coverage is available for your eligible spouse and your eligible children up to age 26* as defined in the certificate of insurance and riders, if employee coverage is elected.

*Standard ages may vary.

How much does it cost?

The cost of Hospital Indemnity Insurance varies. Please refer to your enrollment materials or contact your employer.

Do I need to provide health information when I apply?

No. There are no medical questions you need to answer or medical tests to take in order to get coverage. Pre-existing condition limitations may apply.

If an employee’s spouse and/or child also works at the company and is covered as an employee, are they also eligible for coverage under the Spouse and/or Child Rider?

No. If your spouse is covered under the policy as an employee, then your spouse is not eligible for coverage under the Spouse rider. Likewise, if your child is covered under the policy as an employee, then your child is not eligible for child coverage under the Child Rider.

Additionally, if both you and your spouse or domestic partner are covered under the policy as an employee, then only one of you may cover your children. If the parent who is covering the children stops being insured as an employee, then the other parent may enroll for children coverage.

See the certificate and any riders for a complete description of benefits, exclusions and limitations.

A complete description of benefits, limitations, exclusions and termination of coverage will be provided in the certificate of insurance and riders. All coverage is subject to the terms and conditions of the group policy. If there is any discrepancy between this document and the group policy documents, the policy documents will govern. To keep coverage in force premiums are payable up to the date of coverage termination.
